The IBM Personal Computer XT 5160 from 1983 is one of the most iconic computers in the collection and one of the only desktop computers. This was the second Personal Computer from IBM after the initial PC 5150 from 1981. Personally I think the 5160 is much more usable because of the 8 ISA ports instead of 5, a power supply with twice the power output but mostly because of the build in hard disk drive. After purchasing the computer I was lucky enough to acquire the 5151 monochrome 12″ green monitor to make the setup complete together with an original Model F ‘XT’ keyboard. A color monitor model 5153 was also available but personally I think the green phosphor glow looks much better.

This post is not supposed to be about the IBM Personal Computer itself or the technical details but more about the setup around it. While searching information about the IBM XT 5160 I came across advertising for the computer featuring the Charlie Chaplin character Little Tramp portrayed by the actor Billy Scudder. What really caught my attention was the elegance of the complete setup with the computer, monitor and keyboard placed on a round white table together with a chair in a similar design. A small detail was a red rose in a small white vase. I was so fascinated by this little and recognizable setup that I had to investigate further about it. Ultimately because I wanted to recreate this setup for my own computer if it was able to recognize the items and later find them for sale.

TABLE

I started to search online for a round white table, where a lot of different designs came up, just not anyone in the same elegant design with the nice thin tabletop and curved center leg. After a lot of research I found out the table was designed by Eero Saarinen, called the Tulip table and sold by a company called Knoll. I didn’t found any tables for sale at the regular second hand places but by pure luck some time later I found the lower part just without the tabletop, placed at the sidewalk meant for bulky waste collection. It wasn’t in the best condition it had some scratches and marks. But I wouldn’t argue about the price. Then I just had to find or make the tabletop. I ended up buying another round table where I could repurpose the tabletop which measured 90 cm, close enough to the 91 cm of the original small version of the table. I think this is the correct size compared to pictures found online. Sometimes the computer and monitor is shown standing next to each other and fits within the circumference. An important detail of the tabletop is that it has a reverse chamfer. I used a handheld router and build a jig to cut a wide edge off the underside and sanded it down until it felt smooth. The last thing was to paint the table and mount it with screws on top of the center leg.

CHAIR

Tracking down the model of the chair when I knew both the designer and model name of the table was a lot easier. The chair is called Tulip chair. It comes in different versions with or without integrated armrests and with or without back cushion. The chair itself is only available in white but the cushions comes in different colors. There wasn’t any chairs for sale when I searched online for both Eero, Knoll or Tulip. But after some random browsing I found a single chair for sale on Marketplace for 400 DKK listed as an unknown design. I bought it the same day since I was afraid it would be sold because of the low price. It came with a red cushion, which I really appreciate since this seems like the most popular color and has a great contrast to all the white. I also like the detail that the chair was considered Space Age when it was released because of its futuristic curvy design and the use of artificial materials.

ROSE IN A VASE

A small but very important detail is the rose in the tall white vase. The red color is a perfect match to the red cushion on the chair. The rose is just a plastic one that looks like the one you can win in a tivoli shooting competition. The vase however was so much harder to find. Online there was just way too many different kinds to choose from and without a known brand it was very slowly to search through. I made it a habit to scout for the right design everytime I came by a second hand store, and then finally I found one. I’m not sure it is a 100% match but it looks very much like it. It has the same round bottom and it curve outwards at the top, it’s just a little to low.

MISSING MANUALS

The last thing I’m missing is the stack of manuals. Below is a list of the manuals that I would like to add to the setup. The only place I have seen them for sale is on eBay and they are not cheap. Especially not if you have to buy them separately and include taxes and shipping each time.

Technical Reference

Hardware Maintenance and Service Vol. 1-3

BASIC

DOS Technical Reference

I can really recommend https://minuszerodegrees.net/ where you can browse through a lot of documentation about the IBM 5160 XT and similar computers like IBM 5140 Convertible, 5150 PC, 5155 Portable PC and 5170 AT.

DESCRIPTION

In 1979 Nokia and Salora established a joint venture, Mobira, which was involved in mobile radio telephone research and manufacturing. In 1981 Mobira launched the Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT), known as 1G, a predecessor to the more well-known GSM 2G cellular net. Back then mobile phones were only mobile in the sense that they would be mounted in a moving vehicle, like the Mobira Talkman. It wasn’t something you would carry around in your hand. Not until the Mobira Cityman 900 came out in 1987. Since I’m born the same year I had never seen one being used in real life, but often seen it in commercials in old technology magazines.

The Cityman was a huge leap in innovation weighting under a kilogram and being true handportable. In 1984 a Mobira Senator weighted 9.8 kg and the Mobira Talkman from 1985 weighted 4.8 kg. Both of them were meant for being installed in a vehicle, since battery was and ad on feature and they were hardly portable. The Cityman 900 would have 14 hours of standby time and up to 50 minutes of talk time.

It included innovative features shown on the tiny LCD like duration of last call, last number redial, set the level of the ringtone, display its own number and the possibility of locking the keypad (however it’s very unlikely you can fit the phone in your pocket!).

At the time of launch $5,000 was considered very expensive and making it a high-end luxury product and it was primarily targeted for business professionals like the CEO that needed to get in contact with the company or for the stockbroker at Wall Street. The Cityman was initially a “yuppie” product and a status symbol of wealth and freedom but only a few years later the mobile phone started to gain more widespread success.

RELEVANCE

The Mobira Cityman 900 is acknowledge as some of the first true handheld cell phones that you could carry around. At the time of launch of the Cityman 900, Nokia had taken over Salora and renamed the telecommunication division to Nokia Mobira Oy. But the Nokia name is almost only a small site note at the bottom of the phone. Two years after launch, in 1989 the company was renamed Nokia Mobile Phones. That makes the Cityman 900 one of the very first Nokia mobile phones. Later models had the Nokia logo on the side instead of the Mobira.

In Finland the phone was known as Gorba. A reference to the president of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev that used a Cityman 900 to make a call from Helsinki to Moscow to talk to Vladimir Glinka, Deputy Minister of Communications. The Cityman 900 is a great icon with a very distinct design, looking more like a walkie-talkie than a regular cell phone. It even got a hand strap so you wouldn’t drop your very expensive show-off gadget.

The Cityman 900 hasn’t any actual use today because the NMT network was closed down 1st of March 2002 in Denmark.

PURCHASE

Like most of my great purchases this showed up somewhere on an online sales page without actively searching for it. I had to have it right away and got it fairly cheap. It came without any accessories like battery or charger but the condition was great. Some years later I searched for the earlier Mobira Talkman and found one very nearby in a neighboring town, but when I reached out to the seller it was unfortunately already sold.

RESTORATIONS AND MODIFICATION

After a brief cleaning I thought about removing two small stickers on the device, but decided to leave them on, since they contribute to the history of the device. The sticker on top is from P&T Telestyrelsen approving the device save to use on the NMT network. On the back is a sticker from a company called Kurt Ovi A/S. First I thought it was the company that owned the phone while in use. When I looked up the company name it was clear that it was from the distributor that sold the phone from new. The company started back in 1977 by installing radio phones permanently mounted in cars and trucks.

DESCRIPTION

The OmniGo 700LX is a strange bastard. Inside you will find a 200LX Palmtop PC running a DOS compatible system on a 80186 compatible CPU. The external PCMCIA port has been modified with an extra internal one for the Nokia Cellular Data Card that enables communication with the Nokia 2110 GSM mobile phone that can be slided into the top of the device. The connection with the Nokia 2110 enables the palmtop to add functionality like data, fax and sms.

The external appearance is, to put it mildly, obscure. It looks very bulky and enormous compared to the small and elegant 200LX palmtop. Because of the Nokia phone outside it has a very similar look compared to the Nokia 9000 Communicator – a small LCD, physical keys and the external antenna. The Nokia 9000 Communicator was also the main reason why the OmniGo 700LX never got popular. It came out just under a year after and packed similar features in a relative smaller, lighter and more elegant design. At that time the Nokia 2110 would start to become obsolete making the OmniGo 700LX a short-term investment to buy.

This is pure speculations from my side but I think the idea to the OmniGo 700LX must have come from someone at HP using their 200LX with the Nokia PCMCIA card connected to their Nokia phone and found it a bit messy and annoyed having the PCMCIA slot always in use with the Nokia without possibility of using other cards at the same time. They then reached out to Nokia asking them to help integrate the setup in a new model. At the same time Nokia had been working on their own solutions to this in the form of the first Nokia Communicator. They must have known at the time of design that the OmniGo 700LX was a bad idea.

RELEVANCE

One of my main fascinations about collecting vintage computers and palmtops is models that show the development and strange form factors. This model has to be on the top 3 of most strange form factors I have in my collection. A mobile phone plugged directly into a palmtop pc that looks more like a design study or prototype than a finished product.

The HP OmniGo 700LX ended up as a total failure since Nokia revealed its Nokia 9000 Communicator at the time of shipment.

PURCHASE

I bought it on DBA from a seller who didn’t know what it was or if it worked. This was a very lucky find sinces it is rare to come by and often rather expensive. Even on eBay they only show up once in a while. By pure luck I already had a Nokia 2110 laying around that fits perfectly on top of the HP OmniGo 700LX. I’m not sure if it was sold together as a bundle from new or purchased separately.

OLPC – One Laptop Per Child, also known a the $100 laptop, was a non-profit initiative that had a goal of suppling educational devices for children in the developing world with cheap and accessible computing resources in the form of a small laptop with included software. The OLPC XO-1 was a low-cost and low-power laptop that looked like nothing else compared to how a typical laptop was designed. When my daughter first saw the laptop sitting on my workbench she called it a Shrek computer because of the bright green color and the unfolded Wi-Fi antennas looking like the ears of Shrek.

Even though the computer has limited processing resources it comes with a color display, Wi-Fi, stereo speakers, touchpad, spill resistance keyboard, web-camera, rotating screen that makes it a tablet and with a build-in handle in a rugged design. This computer only comes with a standard 230V power adapter to charge the computer. Another way to charge it was through a solar panel or a hand operated generator.

RELEVANCE

This laptop is interesting because everything about it is different compared to a normal laptop. It looks very much like a child’s computer because of the bright green color and it looks very plastic and rubber like. It’s funny because of the form factor with a build in handle like the Tulip E-Go or the Toughbook a feature you only see on rugged laptops. XO-1 is unique and no one since it has tried to build something similar.

PURCHASE

I never actively searched for this computer. I had heard about it but it’s not a computer you see for sale often. Instead it came to me one day where I had to take some trash to the electronics container. There it was lying in its original cardboard box together with the charger. To my big surprise it worked when I plugged in the power cable. This computer is very unique because of its background and history, but it’s also a very funny childish design in a different formfactor.

RESTORATIONS AND MODIFICATION

Except for giving it a brief cleaning with a cloth, nothing has been done to this computer. My guess is that it has been lying in its cardbox for almost all of its life.

At my workplace we have a small electronics workshop where students can get help with projects, borrow equipment, buy tools and order components. They wanted to make their physical space a little more visible with a sign that described what they are doing. Instead of electronics workshop they are know by the name ELAB for electronics laboratory.

DESIGN

After a small brainstorm with my colleagues I got the task to design something that would make people recognize the place only by looking at the sign. The outline of the letters was designed with our company font type. Some of my thoughts was that it should be colorful, 3D and physical with things the user can interact with.

The basis for each letter are made by sheets of MDF. The wall where they should hang had plenty of empty space so I wanted to maximize the size of each letter. The only problem was that the letter A was a bit wider compared to the other letters, so A defined the total size for the rest. The four letters was each converted from a SVG file into a DXF file and laser cut on our CNC Laser cutter. We talked about painting the MDF plate but dropped the idea since we wanted to finish it as fast as possible.

My idea was to decorate the letters a bit like The Circuit Board Coffee Table were old printed circuit boards was used to cover the wooden plate. Compared to cover a large rectangular area it took a little more puzzle skills to do the same with narrow, triangle and round areas. The interesting thing is that all most all of the e-waste that is used has been used at my workplace in some form. Judge the result for yourself.

A future development for the sign could be to make it more interactive so a LCD could write different messages, a blinking LED, a button that would turn on and off a fan or a speaker making a random sound when a person is detected by a motion sensor.

Around a year ago my wife and I went to a local thrift store because she had showed me some pictures of old Commodore computers they had for sale. The owner told me about this estate they had cleared with a huge amount of old Commodores that was now for sale in the store. I ended buying an Amiga A600 HD and Amiga A1200. The A600 worked and we fooled around with it playing old games that was included. The A1200 was sold on since Amigas is not in my main focus.

FIRST LOOK AT THE COMPUTER EQUIPMENT

A couple of days later the owner send me some pictures of another lot that was still home in his barn since he did not thought it would fit in his shop. I thought it looked a little to old to have my interest but we agreed that I would help him selling the equipment to a collector or museum. The device on the picture was a Danish computer from Regnecentralen, a RC 7000 Minicomputer System model 7006.

Regnecentralen Minicomputer

We finally found a date where I could come by his place to have a look at the equipment. At first I was a bit disappointed because it just looked like a collection of cables, typewriters and old CRT terminals even though it was hidden away like a real barn find and it was hard to see everything at once. After we got most of the equipment outside I could get a closer look at it. I saw the mini computer he send me a picture of that actually looked quite cool with the toggle switches on the front panel. There were also a box full of punched tapes, two teletypes, equipment for reading the punched tapes, a box with an Amiga A600 and a Commodore C64. We agreed that I would bring all of it home and help him sell it. He shortly told me about where he found the things. In a large house where a professor working at a university had lived it was found at his attic. It had all been connected and mounted in a computer rack. Almost like he just took it home after it was discharged by the university to continue working on it at home after work.

UNLOADING AND STATUS OVERVIEW

It took me two trips to his place to get all of it home in my garage. I spend several evenings sorting through boxes, looking up model numbers and browsing through original documentations. Through my research I found out that the Regnecentralen 7006 minicomputer was in fact a rebranded Data General Nova model 2/10 sold under an OEM deal. This was the single most interesting part of the lot. The rest of it is mostly accessories for the minicomputer. Through the connectors on the computer and on some of the equipment I figured out that the punched card reader and the punched tape reader had originally be connected to the minicomputer through some, to me obscure and unknown, connectors. After a closer inspection of the minicomputer I concluded that it seem to be complete with both CPU, RAM, core rope memory, IO control and card reader cards and a RS-232 connection. The only things missing was a broken toggle switch on the front and the key for the power switch.

The more I investigated about the minicomputer the more I wanted to keep it. I reached out to the owner and we agreed that I could buy the complete lot. My intention is definitely not to keep all of it. I hope to sell off half of it to finance the other half. Below is a complete list of the computer equipment I got. Items marked with a * has since been sold.

Since I was a kid and started to take electronics equipment apart, I have always been fascinated by LEDs – Light Emitting Diodes. The best thing was to find a front control panel from a VCR, stereo or similar with displays, buttons and a lot of LEDs in different colors and shapes. When I started to play around with embedded programming it was fun to try and make them light up in different patterns.

Later on I learned about using shift registers and dedicated LED driver chips for controlling color and patterns. Once I came across some LED tubes from a big LED screen. Each stack of 15 LEDS (5 Clusters of red+green+blue LEDs) was controlled by a MBI5025 16-channel controller through SPI. I never made anything useful out of them except for turning all the LEDs of the same color on so I could use them in a similar way as a simple RGB light strip.

ADAFRUIT NEOPIXEL LIBRARY

Later on the WS2812 was released around 2013. In the beginning it was a bit challenge to control because of the strict timing since it only had a single data pin and no clock. That changed when Adafruit introduced the NeoPixel product line together with the brilliant Überguide describing how to use the NeoPixel library. It can be used to control WS2812 (IC embedded inside LED), WS2811 (external driver IC) and SK6812 (RGB+white LED).

Other very useful Arduino libraries for NeoPixels is FastLED and WLED. WLED can be used together with an ESP32 as a webserver to control the setup and light patterns, it also integrates with Home Assistant. I have used WLED for another WS2812 project in the my garage. This will be described in a later post someday.

HOW IT WORKS

Back to this story… The reason why I started looking into making a LED strip with individually-addressable RGB color pixels was to decorate my daughters bed when she was a baby. I looked into different things and found this video by David Bick which I found interesting. David seems like a nice guy since he shared his code on GitHub.

His project was about making a jar of fireflies that would lit up when you move it, detected by an accelerometer. Since I wanted it to stay on when power is applied I removed the detection part.

The code has different control parameters than what I needed for my idea. I will briefly describe below, but I refer to the code for the full overview.

First the pin for controlling the NeoPixel is defined and the numbers of pixels of the complete string. MAX_GLOWING_PIXELS defines how many pixels will be lit at a random time ranging between only a single pixel up to the complete string. The three values I played around with most of the time was: hueCenter, hueRange and baseSpeed. The last value defines how fast a given pixel will lit up and fade out combined with a random part. To understand the two other variables a basic knowledge about the Hue color space is needed. hueCenter defines the center color and hueRange defines how far the colors spread out. This part was a bit trial and error to learn how it worked. In Davids code he wanted colors in the blue, turquoise and green area to mimique fireflies. If you wanted it to look more like fire you should change the base color the orange area and make it spread out from yellow to red. I just wanted it to show all colors so I picked a hueCenter in the middle (turquoise) with a wide spread (from red to red). When you play around with it you will understand.

After I found the values I found pleasant I made a small box for the Arduino Nano to control the light strip together with a 5V power supply to power the LEDs. Remember to read this part of the Überguide to understand how to specify the required power to your string.

It was used on by daughters bed for a couple of months but for the following Christmas is was brought to my workplace for decoration and is still in use right now.

VIDEO

The video below shows the changing pattern. Speed, color center and color range can be changed by reprogramming the Arduino.

WANT YOUR OWN

From the description and links in this post you should be able to build your own. But let me know I you want me to build a complete setup for you.

By changing the original Arduino Nano to an ESP32 it would be quite easy to have a webserver where you could change the relevant values for different string lengths and light patterns.

QUITE ON DATHS GARAGE

Not much has happened online or in my workshop during the last year, compared to the beginning of the corona lockdown where I worked on many different projects. Of course nice projects come and go in an unpredictable pattern, and sometimes I have more time for projects than other times. But the last year has been affected by an annoying disease caused by meningitis. Fortunately, nothing life-threatening, but it has taken up all my energy so I did not have any left for hobby projects or writing on DathsGarage.com. Another reason is that I bought a house, moved in and started on a lot of renovation projects. A little more than a year ago we moved into the house and started the renovation projects.

SEARCHING FOR A HOUSE

Back when the corona pandemic spread in Denmark the media speculated about if house prices would drop. I hoped this would be the chance for my family to gain a foothold in the housing market. Unfortunately it did not take long before the opposite happened and the average price rose around 10-15% instead. Suddenly it seemed like everyone wanted to find a bigger place when they had to work from home and had nowhere to go in the weekends because everything was closed.

We had been looking a bit at different houses in a small town outside of the city we currently lived in. Most of them had a lot of things that had to be fixed or else they were out of our budget. Originally we were looking for a house from the 1920s to 1930s, because I love the architecture and the idea about having a multi-story house, but most of them needed a complete renovation.

THE PERFECT MATCH

Just after we agreed to set our house searching on standby we received an email from one of the real estate agents about a drawer case that they had just got that wasn’t put online yet. We agreed on seeing the house the next day even though we did not have high expectations about it. It was a house from 1961 in very original condition. But there was something interesting about the floor plan, the newer extension and the fact that the house had a full basement with a garage.

The new house

The next day we saw the house and agreed that with some money (a lot, we figured out) and a lot of hard work this could become our dream house. Afterwards we made an offer on the house and to our big surprise we ended up buying the house.

Unfortunately everything was slowed down because of my meningitis disease and the fact that I was hospitalized for around 10 days. But my wife kicked in and managed to finish the house deal, take care of our family and get everything to work at home.

After we signed the deal we had a couple of months before we could move into the house. In the meantime I started doing a budget and time schedule for the most important renovation work. This included paint and new floor for the bedroom and to divide one of the living rooms into two bedrooms for our kids by building a plaster wall, removing old wallpaper, putting up new wallpaper, paint and new floor.

Another task would be to pack down my small basement workshop so it would be ready to move to the house. Even though the workshop is small the task is definitely not simple because of all the stuff that I have down there. A lot of the tools, computers and electronics stuff could be packed in moving boxes but a lot of the servers, tables and furniture had to be moved as it stood.

Most of the smaller stuff was crammed into my car in moving boxes but the rest had to wait for the rented moving truck.

TIME + HARD WORK + MONEY = ALMOST PERFECT

The basement of the house is more than perfect for all of our hobbies. There is a small viktualierum (Danish for storage room for food), a storage room for my wifes kitchen supplies and machines. Then there is the big 40 m2 garage which will become my main workshop but where I will leave room for a car to be parked. Next to the garage there is a smaller 16 m2 room without windows that will become perfect for my vintage computer and gadget collection. At the other end of the basement another room at 20m2 will become my Lego working and display room.

The only catch about the basement is that right now it is completely filled up with tools, materials, furniture and memorable from the previous owner. This has to be sorted into stuff that can be sold, stuff that must be thrown out or given away and the rest that I want to keep myself.

Another challenge is that the three rooms will need to be upgraded to a better standard which means that I will paint the ceiling, upgrade the old fluorescent tubes with LED panels, remove all the screw holes in the walls before painting, look at some moisture problems in the walls, and at the end paint the floor with durable epoxy paint.

The problem with all this renovation is that it is going to cost a fortune but my hope is that by selling a lot of the stuff in the basement it will be possible to minimize the expenses for materials. I also need to make a plan about where to move all my stuff in order to empty the rooms that needs to be renovated.

THE GREAT GARAGE SALE

Even though the previous owner had a lot of great stuff in the basement a lot of it had to go before I could make everything like I wanted it. I started out by sorting out the stuff I wanted to keep myself, throughout the stuff that had absolutely no value and then organize the rest that I wanted to sell.

In the beginning I agreed that people could show up and sort through everything and buy what they wanted. The only problem was that people spent several hours digging through everything while telling a lot of interesting stories about themselves and their hobbies but in the end they only bought for a couple of hundred DKK. I quickly realized that this wasn’t the way to go. Several people also asked me about a price for the whole lot but weren’t willing to pay a lot. Instead I started to sell off boxes with similar stuff in smaller or larger lots. That helped a lot and I found some buyers that filled up an entire trailer or van. I earned a lot of money and freed up a lot of room. I had a rather offensive sales strategy so after a lot was put up online for sale I quickly lowered the price to get it sold.

After about half a year everything I wanted to get rid of was either handed over to the recycling station, given away or sold.

THE RESSURECTION OF THE BASEMENT

Empty the wall from shelves, tool boards, hooks etc.

Empty the floor or move the remaining stuff around

Clear the ceiling from old fluorescent lamps

Getting rid of screw holes in the walls and ceiling.

Paint the ceiling

Install 60×60 LED panels (to have a nice lighting for the rest of the process)

Remove loose plaster from the walls

Paint the walls, cables and pipes.

pgrade the floor by applying self-leveling concrete and paint with epoxy paint.

The process of renovating the basement was long, hard and dirty so instead of describing a lot I will show you a lot of images instead. I did not have much experience with craftsmanship about house renovation so I read a lot of DIY forums and learned a lot from Youtube.
DESCRIPTION

The Micro-Professor MPF-1 is a training system designed to teach the fundamentals of machine code and assembly language for the Zilog Z80 microprocessor. A training system was typically used by students within computer science or by designers that wanted to design a computer around a specific microprocessor.
The MPF-1 is known as a Single Board Computer because all the components like, CPU, RAM, ROM, I/O etc. is located on the same printed circuit board.
The ROM on this B version is loaded with a BASIC interpreter and a simple monitor program. A program could be entered through the keyboard or loaded through the audio interface connected to a cassette player.
This embedded system is an early predecessor to todays Arduino and Raspberry Pi embedded computers. The biggest difference is that all the functionality is merged into a single chip instead of dedicated hardware for CPU, RAM, ROM, I/O etc.

RELEVANCE

The MPF-1 is an iconic Z80 based development board among the earliest single board computers only beaten by based 8080 Intel SDK-80 1975, 6502 based KIM-1 1976 MC68000 Educational Computer 1981.
It’s a funny little computer in a box with integrated display and keyboard.
This computer is relevant because it shows the basic element of a computer and is an early predecessor to embedded controllers like Arduino, Raspberry Pi or similar.

I bought this computer on DBA for a good price. I’m not sure the seller even knew what he sold me. When I got it, I was surprised to see that it was the updated B version with BASIC in ROM. A couple of years before I bought this one I saw another seller who sold both the MPF-1 and the MPF-1P (plus) for a price, which I back then thought was a little high, but now I’m annoyed that I didn’t got them. Because the MPF-1P is hard to get and very expensive on eBay.

RESTORATIONS AND MODIFICATION

I installed another AM9128 RAM chip to double the amount of RAM to 4 kB in total. Actually it was just to have the board fully populated rather than because I needed the extra RAM.

DESCRIPTION

In the mid 90s IBM was into the Thin Client business, first known as the Network Station but renamed in 2000 to be included in the NetVista branch and withdrawn in 2002.
A thin client is a simple network connected computer that is optimized for a remote connection with a server. The server is responsible for the hard work like processing power, data storage and software execution. The thin client can be seen as a way of connecting the keyboard, mouse and display to the network.
Thin clients are a further development of the multi-user computer terminals connected to mainframes of the past but instead of the text based terminals thin clients was extended with a graphical user interface.
The IBM N2200 has connections for a VGA display, two USB ports for mouse and keyboard, sound input and output and then the network connection for the server. This makes it possible for the user to make a remote connection into the server where all the needed software is installed, all files are kept, and the server does all the calculation. The nice thing about a system like this is that a thin client can be based on cheap and low end hardware, data is protected because it is not stored locally and it is simpler for a system administrator to manage the software installations.

RELEVANCE

I used to be very fascinated by simplicity of thin clients back when they were a thing. They were often used on schools, libraries and similar places. When I stumbled upon this IBM Thin Client I just wanted to have it, even though I’m not even sure if it can be used for anything useful as a stand alone device.
The design is very typical IBM in the black and edgy manner. The front design share similarities with IBM NetVista desktop computers as well as the IBM eServer xSeries e.g. the model 205.

PURCHASE

I found the computer on eBay while searching for something else probably IBM related. I just couldn’t let it go because I had never seen an IBM Thin Client before. It was sold as a Buy It Now for almost nothing.

RESTORATION AND MODIFICATION

When I received the computer I opened the cabinet to explore the mainboard. While disassembling the cabinet I discovered that the white plastic power button was broken of. This was easily fixed with some Loctite super glue.
